Square No. 10

landart

Author: Iryna Troma (Amosova-Novikova), Lithuania

Location: Tyagin, Kherson region,

Ukraine. August 2021

In Lithuania, the artist is known due to her landart and installations using willow rods, and this material she planed to use during the art-residence. However, after getting to know the archaeologists and the area, she decided to work with the land. The work is located in the archaeological square No.10, which has already been investigated in previous years. The artist communicated with archaeologists and was inspired by their stories, because in her childhood she dreamed of becoming an archaeologist, but... she was late for the exams. Iryna was very inspired by the acquaintance with the professor of the Institute of Archeology Svitlana Bilyaeva, and Ms.Svitlana helped to choose a place for the landart next to the excavation. About her work, Iryna says: "Each generation walks on its own land. Therefore, the only way to find out how our ancestors lived is to study this land. I created a kind of portal in Ukrainian land, from which Lithuanian artifacts are obtained." The figurative base of this landart object resonates with both Ukrainian and Lithuanian folk ornament, and, like the ornament, ancient symbols are encoded in it – male and female, the sun, the circle of life.
